Press Release: NFN's Serious Concern over the Arrest and Mistreatment of Journalists

Responsible unit
NGO Federation of Nepal

Version 2

Signed NFN press release in Nepali, dated 2083/07/14, on the arrest and mistreatment of journalists

Date: 14 Kartik 2083 BS (31 October 2026).

The NGO Federation of Nepal has taken serious note of the arrest, threatening, mistreatment and intimidation of journalists on the basis of what they have written or published.

Mistreating, arresting or creating fear among the media, the fourth estate, and those who work in it makes a mockery of democratic values, press freedom and the rule of law. Such acts seriously affect not only independent journalism but also citizens' right to information, freedom of expression and democratic practice.

In a democratic system of governance, press freedom and freedom of expression are the fundamental rights of citizens. Taking journalists into custody, harassing them or discouraging them from carrying out their professional duties simply because they wrote or published news is unacceptable.

In this context, the NGO Federation of Nepal earnestly appeals to the Government of Nepal not to take such steps against journalists and media workers, to fully respect press freedom and freedom of expression, and to protect citizens' fundamental rights and freedoms in line with the Constitution of Nepal and prevailing law.

The Federation also strongly urges the Government to resolve any legal question or dispute arising in the course of journalists' professional duties in line with the Constitution, prevailing law and the principles of the rule of law, and to ensure an environment in which journalists can work freely, safely and fearlessly.

Respecting public sentiment, the NGO Federation of Nepal calls on all concerned parties to play a responsible role in protecting people's rights, civil liberties, press freedom and democratic values.
