We believe that the case of punishment of the Chief of Army Staff Rookmangud Katawal and the subsequent order of President Ram Baran Yadav to the army has undermined the popular mandate to establish lasting peace with the supremacy of the people. Following this, the political situation in the aftermath of the resignation of Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has drawn our serious concern. Moreover, increasing foreign influence in Nepal’s politics has made us sadder. We strongly demand the political parties to form a national government by forging a national consensus among them respecting the mandate of the people manifested in the Constituent Assembly election and People’s Movement of April 2006.
We appeal to all the parties to proceed according to the will of the people to institutionalize federalism, democracy and republicanism by drafting the new constitution without any further delay. We would also like to warn the political parties through this press release that if they make any decisions to weaken the mandate of the people they will not be excused for this.
We members of Civil Society Organizations urge the political parties to present themselves seriously in order to resolve the present crisis. They need to acknowledge the existing problems concerning lives of the people and respect the 12 point agreement, comprehensive peace accord, Interim Constitution and other agreements. We appeal to the parties to carry out their duty of restructuring the New Nepal by drafting the new Constitution for the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal.
