Women Conference

NFN organized a women conference entitled "Constitution Making and Women Rights: Opportunities and Challenges" on 28th April 2010 in Kathmandu. The major objective of the conference was to share about the opportunities and challenges being faced by the women CA members as well as women rights activists of Nepal for ensuring the women rights in the new constitution.

The program was organized in the presence of women activists from the 75 districts of Nepal along with the women CA members and the representatives of the organizations working on the issue of women in the upcoming constitution of Nepal. CA members Binda Pandey, Shanti Adhikari and Mohamadi Sidiqui shared about the current status and updated about the ongoing peace process and constitution writing process. They also shared about the challenges and opportunities they are facing as women CA members in addressing the issues of women and their rights. The representatives from the organizations working on the issue of women focusing to the constitution writing presented about the positive as well as the negative aspect of the reports submitted by the thematic committees. They also provided some feedbacks that can be incorporated in order to address the women's issues and ensure the women rights in new constitution.

Meena Bista and Kala Rai from Jagaran Nepal and Meera Dhungana from Forum for Women, Law and Development were the presenters who focused the issue of citizenship rights and the other rights that are being included in the report of the thematic committees.

Advocate Geeta Pathak Sangraula presented updated information about the ongoing peace process, constitution writing process and the opportunities and the hindrances seen in making the new constitution women friendly. During the sharing she also shared on what the women CA members can do and on what points and issues they can pressurize the CA to address the women's issues and their rights.

During an open sharing, women participants throughout the nation expressed their agony on the ongoing political deadlock. They expressed their readiness to support the women CA members at any cost in order to make their voice heard inside the CA where the issue of women and their rights needs to be addressed.

As a whole, the conference shared that the women CA members should play a vital role in addressing women issues in the new constitution and they should also try to put aside their political values and interest when the issue of women comes in front of them. The CA women caucus should also act effectively for the issue. Women CA members expressed the need of support and back force from other women from outside the CA in order to pressurize the CA as a whole to give priority and focus to the women issues and address them in the new constitution. The CA members also expressed that since they represent different political parties with different ideologies, sometimes it's hard to have common voice on certain issues due to the ideology. However, as women they always try to give more focus on women's issues and fight together for that in the CA.

The conference concluded that the women of Nepal are still being deprived of the rights and opportunities provided by the state. So, the women of Nepal along with the women CA members should unite for getting the opportunity of enjoying those facilities. The situation of impunity, discrimination based on caste, class, race and sex still prevails in the country; so they should be abolished and initiative should be taken from every responsible citizen. The upcoming new constitution should ensure each and every right for women and also guarantee the proper environment for enjoying the provisions of the state. The issues of women like citizenship, single women, health, education and other social, economic, political and cultural rights and opportunities should be addressed making the constitution women friendly. The women CA members are taken as the agent for fighting on the issue of women and insuring that they are addressed in the new constitution and the women throughout the nation are ready to give them support and raise voice being outside the CA.
