Recommendations Handover to CA Members in Full Swing

People’s opinion collection around constitutional issues is in full swing all over the districts. A one-day public interaction programme was organized in Dhading on 21 March 2009 to hand over the recommendations prepared by various civil society organizations to the CA members.

The Interaction programme was organized by District Chapter Dhading of NFN along with District Development Committee in coordination with other civil societies, federations, alliances and NGOs working in the vicinity. The programme provided a platform for the people to bring the discourses on inclusion, federalism and helped to grab the attention of the CA Members towards the hardship that every Nepali is leading for equality, identity and for mere survival. Around 115 representatives of different sectors of society including women, Dalit, Indigenous people, differently able persons, peasants, trade union, youth, intellectuals, professionals, natural resource user groups, human rights activists, NGO workers, and civil societies gathered in the programme to handover their suggestions to CA members on ten various thematic issues for writing a new constitution. The representatives of NFN and other NGOs also appealed for recognizing NGOs role in the development sector in the new constitution.

People in Dhading, after making their concerns heard, mandated the CA Members with a responsibility to incorporate every such agenda that respects people’s identity, protects their rights and reinforces their access to power and resources in New Nepal. The team leader of People’s Opinion Collection Committee, CA Member Mr. Sambhu Hazara Dusadh along with seven other CA Members; Mr. Narayan Kaji Shrestha, Ms. Sita Gurung, Ms. Padma K. Aryal, Ms Parvati Thapa, Ms Kalpana Dhamala, Ms Puspa Bikram Malla, and Mr. Gyanendra Kamal representing various political affiliations were of the common view that constitution writing is not only limited to political and CA polemics, people should join the CA members and show them the way ahead for promulgating a constitution that will make people more sovereign and the state responsive. Mr. Rajendra Pandey and Mr Ram Nath Adhikari Ex. Minister for Local Development and Ex Parliamentarian respectively also expressed their solidarity in participatory constitution making by attending the one-day programme.

Likewise, District Chapters of NGO Federation of Nepal (NFN) have swung into action and are urging the commoners, grassroots people and the civil societies to participate in the constitution making process.
